You look terrible.Is everythingall right?”Sage shook his head blindly.“No.My godfather has just been rushed tohospital.He was in a car accident.Ihave to get to Broomfield Hospital.Ihave no car here, has anyone got one Ican borrow?”Luke nodded decisively.“You’re inno shape to drive, getting news like that.Come on, I’ll take you in.This seems tobecoming a habit for us, driving peopleto hospitals.”He ushered Sage out of the studio andinto the underground car park.It tookthem nearly two hours to get toChelmsford to the hospital.The Londontraffic was a nightmare.Sage was almosteating his fingers after biting off his nailsin his agitation to get to Miles.Luke pulled up into the hospital andgestured to Sage to get out.“Go.I’ll findsomewhere to park and I’ll find you.”Sage needed no urging.He legged itout of the car and into the A&Edepartment.The young receptionist tookone look at him and gave him her fullattention.“Mr.Sage.I saw you on TV inDalton’s Hospital.You were amazing,really.Are you here to see someone?”“My godfather, Miles Conway, wasadmitted here earlier.He was in a caraccident.I need to see him.”The receptionist looked at hercomputer screen and nodded.“Yes, Mr.Conway was admitted a few hours ago.But I think he’s still in surgery.”Sage felt faint.“Where do I find thedoctor?”“If you take a seat in the waitingroom, Mr.Sage, I’ll tell the surgicalteam you’re here and they’ll come andspeak to you when they can.”She motioned to the room at the farside of the emergency entrance and Sagenodded and made his way over.He satdown on one of the plastic chairs,heaving a shuddering sigh.About ten minutes later Luke came inand sat down beside him.“Have youheard anything yet?” he said.Sage shookhis head mutely.Luke reached over, grasping theyounger man’s shoulder.“Don’t think theworst, Sage.Be patient.” He stood up.“I’m going to get us coffee from thatmachine over there.Be back in aminute.”Sage’s mobile rang.He looked at itdistractedly, ignoring the glares fromeveryone in the waiting room and thecheery soul in the corner who tut-tuttedand pointed to a sign that said “Switchoff all mobiles.” It was Alex.Sage closed his eyes and answered.“Hi.I’m at the hospital in Broomfield.My godfather was in an accident.He’sin surgery at the moment.”“I’ll come down now to be withyou.” Alex sounded horrified.“No, you don’t need to come downhere.Just go home.I’ll be fine.I’ll callyou when I can and let you know what’shappening.Thanks for the call.”He disconnected his call, switchingoff his phone.He didn’t want to seeAlex tonight after he’d been to see Eric [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
