."Where are you going?" Blade looked over andasked, suddenly very afraid."To get you some cigarettes.I have a feeling it'sgoing to be a long night.""But I really don't know anything." Bladepleaded."That you know of." Henderson started to pushthe door closed."How do you know I won't run?""Because you're name isn't Blade and you reallyaren't tough and scary. You name is TracyWalsh and you're scared shitless."Henderson shut the door and walked into theconvenient store to buy the girl some cigarettesand herself a large fountain drink. She had noidea what the girl knew, if anything at all butshe knew that by taking her, Adams wouldsweat a little more. She would question everylast soul in the club thoroughly if she had to.And she knew that this kid in her car, thisBlade, was basically a good kid who was possi-bly in way over her head. With her goods in tow, Henderson climbedback in the truck and they drove in silence tothe station.Blade stared aimlessly out the win-dow, her hands clasped nervously in her lap.Every once in awhile Henderson saw the younggirl wipe a tear from her cheek. For a young girlwho had never been in trouble with the law, thecurrent situation must be pretty frightful. They came to a stop in front of the station andHenderson led the way inside, weaving throughhallways and desks until they reached thehomicide division. She thought about question-ing Blade in one of their interrogation rooms soshe would be able to smoke but when sheturned and saw her pale and drawn face shedecided the tiny room was out of the question."Have a seat." Henderson offered as she satdown at Stewart's desk and set down her drinkand cigarettes. She knew he wouldn't mind ifthe girl smoked at his desk.Blade sat downslowly in the chair across from the desk.Hen-derson slid the pack of cloves and a lighteracross the desk and Blade eyed them and tookthe pack tentatively."Are those any good?" Henderson asked as sherose to retrieve her files from her desk alongwith a small tape recorder which she immedi-ately turned on."They're alright." Blade opened the pack of Dja-rums with trembling hands and placed one inher mouth."How did you know what I smoke?""I know a lot about you Tracy." Henderson re-turned to sit down across from the tough girlwanna bee."It scares me& that you know so much." She litthe dark cigarette and sucked in an appreciativedrag. Her shoulders instantly relaxed as the fa-miliar comfort of the cigarette entered her lungs."Do you mind if I tape record our session?"Blade shrugged."You have to verbally say yes or no.""It's ok." She replied softly."Let's talk about other things that scare you.Does your boss scare you? Elizabeth Adams?"Blade shrugged her shoulders and took anotherdrag of the sweet smelling clove. She wiped herfree hand on her white t-shirt which read "takeme for a ride.""Have you ever spoken to Ms.Adams?" Hen-derson knew the girl wasn't Adam's type and itwas possible that the two had never spoken, that Blade could have been hired and super-vised solely by Kristen Reece."Once or twice." Her brown eyes were shifty, looking around the desk and avoiding Hender-son altogether."What did you talk about?"Blade shrugged her shoulders once again."Work? Did you talk about work?""I guess." She drew in a shaky breath."When was the last time you spoke to Ms.Ad-ams?" Henderson opened up a file, discouragedabout how the interview was going so far."Yesterday.""What happened yesterday?""She came up to me and some of the other girlsand told us not to talk to the cops.""Is that all?" Henderson removed some photo-graphs from her files."Well, one girl asked why and Liz fired her onthe spot."Henderson looked up and met the large browneyes across from her."And that's why you're so afraid to talk to me,for fear of losing your job?'Blade laughed a little at the question."Nahman.I figure I already lost my job the second Ileft with you.""Then why so afraid?"She took another drag, sucking on it like it wasprovided her the courage to talk."All this& murder and everything.I didn'tknow any of this.I thought she just hated copslike everyone else.""You didn't know she was being investigatedfor murder?""No.""What about when we questioned you andsome of the others the other night? That didn'tgive you a clue?""The one cop asked me if I ever talked to Liz,heard her say things about some guys, stuff likethat.Nothing about murder."Henderson sighed and then pushed some pho-tographs across the table for Blade to view."This is why we are asking questions Tracy.Look at the photographs."Blade sat forward in her chair and glanced atthe crime scene photographs."Oh God." Shecovered her mouth and looked away."These men all had families, people that lovedthem. And they all had one thing in common."She waited for the girl to look back at her beforeshe continued."They all gave Elizabeth Adamstrouble and she threatened the lives of all ofthem."Blade let her hand fall away from her mouthand she nervously licked her lips."I.I didn'tknow, I swear." She allowed her eyes to lookback at the photos."What's wrong with them, why do they look like.""That's what happens when a body sits out inthe desert sun.It cooks."Blade covered her mouth again and lookedaway."Put them away please."Henderson scooped up the pictures and putthem back in their files."Let's talk about some-thing else."Blade looked at her once again and sucked onher clove."Anything but that.""How well do you know Kristen Reece?""Kris? I know her pretty well I guess."Henderson sat up straighter in her chair, hopespilling into her blood."Do you know where she is right now?"Blade shook her head no as she thought aboutthe question."Nah, she hasn't been into work
